wow. I cant believe I ate that. and even more, I cant believe I liked that. I think my choice of sugar free pb was helpful. it reminded me of dill pickle potato chips (which I dont know if they have in the US). next time I have a craving for chips, I will eat this freaky sandwich.
03/12/2008
What can I say - I had to try it! This combination worked really well. I think the key is balance; too much of any one of the ingredients would have thrown it off, but if you don't go overboard on anything it all gets together and sings. Reminded me a bit of bread-and-butter pickles; tangy, but sweet, and with a little bite from the onion. I'll make this again!
06/30/2004
I loved this recipe. I had to try it because it was so different and didn't really think I would like it all. The flavors really compliment each other.I used Claussen Sandwich Stackers and red onioin. It's standard lunch box fare now.
12/22/2010
i really loved this and i think my husband was terrified that i was pregnant when he saw the ingredients! It was really good and my nieces and nephew also liked it! thanks!
01/25/2006
I had to try this because it reminded me of a sandwich that my grandfather eats all the time for breakfast which is... PB, mayo and raisens on ww toast. This was surprisingly good as is my grandpa's oldtime favorite. I think I'd like it better with no onion though.
01/23/2007
One of my co-workers eats a peanut butter and pickle sandwich every day. He enjoys both the sandwich and grossing us out. Well, his fun is over, because I made this version (with the onion) and I love it. I used Light Miracle Whip because I don't use mayonnaise. I suggest toasting the whole wheat bread. Six pickle slices seems excessive to me; I used two "sandwich slice" pickle slices instead. The combination of flavors really is delicious!
12/15/2004
This sounded so weird I just had to try it. It was amazing! My husband thought I was crazy and asked if I was pregnant again, but after I assured him I wasn't, the curiosity got the best of him, too... and HE really liked it as well! You just have to try it to believe it!
11/11/2006
This sandwich (hold the onion) is my dad's and my favorite. We thought we were weird for liking this concoction. It's nice to know that we are not alone.
03/20/2006
This was a very interesting sandwich and it was a lot of fun to try. My husband and I both enjoyed it very much. I like the flavor of raw onions as long as it is not very strong so I only used about half of the amount suggested. I'll definitely make it again!
04/09/2006
I gave this a three as I found it neither bad nor exciting just kinda boring. There was not a flavor in particular that stood out to me. My husband laughed when he looked inside the sandwich and gagged his way through eating it. He would have give it one star.
12/12/2005
I couldn't believe my eyes when I read this recipe. This was a staple of mine in high school (minus the onion, though. Never have been a fan of the raw onion.) I have to admit that I loved telling my friends "what I was in the mood for" and watching their faces. Actually, I'm a mother of four and I still love telling my friends that I'm hungry for this sandwich and watching their faces. I'm a dill pickle fan. Heavy on the mayo, heavy on the peanut butter, heavy on the pickle...Delicious!!
02/28/2011
Ok so - after reading the reviews I pretty much new I'd like it, as unusual as this sandwich tasted. Husband, myself and kids all tasted it. And as expected - it tasted good. Flavours blend in and make a flavour of its own. Probably won't be asked to make again though. Fun to tell people you ate it though.
09/14/2011
Thanks for this easy sandwich idea. My siblings loved them. Who would have ever thought that those five ingredients would work so well together? Anyways, this one will definitely be used often for a quick lunch. Thanks for sharing:)
01/25/2007
I really wanted this recipe to be great since it is such an unlikely combination. It was surprisingly good but I doubt I'd make it again.
09/15/2008
I have eating this sandwich forever but w/o the onion. Sometimes I add bacon bits--Yum!!!
08/27/2009
I did not care for this recipe.
03/31/2012
I used miracle whip instead of mayo. Bread and butter pickles instead of dill pickles. It was amazing though!
04/19/2008
To me there wasn't any flavor that stood out. I would much rather have peanut butter and jelly.
05/06/2008
Wow, I was extremely skeptical at first but I decided to try it since I had all the ingredients on hand. AND BOY, was I pleasantly surprised! It tastes great and I was sure afraid that the peanut butter would be overwhelming but that was not the case at all. (Yet I did keep the mayo at a minimal.) Every ingredient brings together a balanced taste as a whole and oddly enough, each ingredient can still be detected with every bite! I highly recommend this! Simple and delicious!
07/18/2010
So i read what everyone had to say..and i did it as well, JUST TRY IT! it does indeed taste like peanutbutter and pickles..i dont get the mayo part..but let me tell you my version..it makes this sangwich TO DIE FOR.. wheat bread, vlasic stackers thin sliced lengthwise dill pickles, red onion, optional mayo, BACON.. make the sandwich and put it in a skillett with butter, make it as you would a grilled cheese...the peanut butter is melty and messy but with the pickles and crispy bacon..i almost passed out...so delightful...id probably do it once a month as an indulgence..i honestly see this as more of a stoners delight haha fun to try though..you wont regret the bacon and crisping melting deliciousness..trust me! im a full advocate of the grilled cheese style skillett butter part of this poor man's delight...DO IT! haha good luck
08/07/2008
OMG! I thought my sister and I were the only people that ate a PB and pickle sandwich. Never put mayo or onion on it though. Just straight up Peanut Butter and pickle. I think Mt. Olive pickles are the best!!! I love me some PB and pickles! Woot! Woot!
11/09/2008
Mmmm! this recipe was sooo good. The tangy flavor of the pickle and the sweet flavor of the pb compliment each other wonderously!I made this and my family kept saying i was wierd but boy were they missing out!
09/25/2005
It was so strange I had to try it. It's better with no onion and substitute bread & butter pickle chips for dill ones. Still quite weird. I guess that's the point though.
12/05/2005
Oddly enough, it tasted really good. This is a great, filling snack when you just don't know what to cook.
04/28/2006
I totally agree with the previous reviewer. This was just boring.
11/27/2012
I have made a variation of this for years. Simply peanut butter onion and salad dressing. I prefer the way salad dressing complaments the peanut butter over mayo. Another old favorite is peanut butter and salad dressing alone. Thanks for the recipe.
09/27/2005
Ok, curiosity got the best of me. I just tried this and surprised myself. It's actually good, though a bit odd at first! I think the trick is to go lighter on the PB than you normally would and use a little more mayo. Will make this again and try red onion and a sliced tomato from the garden next time.
08/24/2006
I used sweet pickle relish, toasted sourdough bread, and generous amount of light kraft mayo and trader's joes crunchy unsalted pb. TASTY. Next time I will try red onion and less pb (but with salt). I like it!
07/28/2009
Dill picle and peanut butter!!! I haven't even tried this recipe, but I fully understand that amazingness that is the PB and pickle sandwich, and these other ingredients sound like they would only make it better. I'm so glad someone else out there loves these sammies!
01/12/2005
Curiosity consumed me on this one and I had to try it.. I love all of the ingredients, but having them together in a sandwich? Even as I was making it, I was thinking, "No way". But to my surprise, it actually tasted quite good. This is probably one that kids would enjoy.
08/21/2009
Weird, but surprisingly good! Try it!
11/15/2004
WOW, I was so impressed with this. It truly sounds awful, but I've always been a risk-taker, so I just had to try it. It didn't taste great at first, but then I experimented with a little more onion, tiny bit more mayo, and then less peanut butter, at which point the true flavor suddenly came out. If you didn't like it, try that. Absolutely delicious, craving another one already!
06/27/2005
Fairly tasty. I had to use dill relish because I'm out of dill pickle, and I had to cut the amounts down because I'm using a smallish loaf of bread, but it's pretty good, actually. I'm sure it'll leave me with fierce breath, though. :P Also, to NENAH25: I think it's called "Poor Man's Sandwich" because it's meant to emulate a sandwich made with meat when it's actually made with less expensive peanut butter plus stuff most people have on hand.
09/11/2006
I love this recipe! I also enjoy substituting the bread with toasted frozen blueberry waffles and leaving out the onions. Verrry tasty!!
08/05/2011
I eat different food combinations all the time. I have to say, I didn't care for this!
01/28/2022
Actually, I have been making these sandwiches but with added cheese since I was a boy.
And I was eighty December last . . .
11/09/2009
The whole time I was making this sandwich, I was laughing to myself, thinking "I cant belive I'm gonna eat this!" But I did, and it was so good!
11/17/2005
Well, my oldest son is into weird food combinations right now, so he wanted to try this. He loved it, of course! I wasn't a huge fan as is, but I have to confess--if you leave out the onion and pickle (and just have peanut butter and mayonnaise), it is surprisingly good.
11/30/2007
It sounds disgusting, but it's not! This sandwich was so weird that I just had to try it out, and even though I don't like dill pickles or peanut butter that much, put all together in between the bread it was actually pretty good!
08/08/2010
I enjoyed this strange sandwich and have made it quite a few times! Didn't measure anything and I used the claussen sliced refridgerated dill pickles which were nice and crunchy. Everyone looks at me like I'm crazy when I eat this, but I don't care - it's good!
01/28/2022
That is just so weird. I can't say that I enjoyed it particularly.
07/03/2006
I never would have thought of trying this (although I do eat PB & onion sandwiches) however, I used a sweet relish instead of the pickle and I'm happy and surprised to say that this was purty darn good.
09/28/2006
OK! This sounded sooo weird and I'm not even that big of a pickle fan but... YUM! Try it, its great! :)
06/18/2005
Considering the odd ingredient combination, it was quite good. My husband disagrees with me though. I appreciated the adventure.
01/12/2009
What an incredible sandwich! It's a new regular of my girlfriend's and mine. Thanks!
05/11/2006
Oddly enough, it was delicious! I toasted my bread and only used one slice cut in half to make a "half sandwich" because I really didn't expect to enjoy it but I found it to be quite tasty.
10/07/2014
Oh man, I'm one of those weirdos who always has to try those foods that mix "abnormal" combinations of foods. While some have fallen flat where all you taste are the two things separately and all you think is "this isn't bad...but it isn't something I want to do again", this sandwich really blends the flavors into something enjoyable. I think they're onto something. I make this whenever I'm feeling something random and have pickles on hand.
07/13/2010
Hmm. The pickles and onions completely overpowered the peanut butter, and I couldn't even taste the mayonnaise. Sorry, but thanks for the interesting recipe! It makes for good conversation: "One time I tried this really weird sammich..." :)
04/21/2010
LOL My BF watched me eat PB & Pickles for 4 yrs before he would try it... and now he can often be found at the counter spreading PB on a pickle for a snack! It does sound odd, but it is SO yummy!
10/18/2013
I love this sandwich. I always make it with no onion though. My mom refuses to try it, although I promise it's delicious!
01/29/2022
I haven't tried it yet, but it reminds me of the sandwiches my dad used to eat. He liked peanut butter a lot, and sometimes he would put onion on his peanut butter sandwich with a little salt and pepper. The addition of pickle and mayo sounds interesting. I can't wait to try it.
01/29/2022
I've been making something similar for 60+ years. Peanut butter, butter chip pickles and American cheese on sliced bread. My father made these for us little kids as a snack on saltine crackers.
01/30/2022
This is an old depression era staple..it was super cheap to get the ingredients .. the peanut butter is a different spin..
02/01/2022
Satisfying! Laid down equal amounts P-butter, then onions, then pickle and mayo on toasted fresh sourdough, and I liked it. Trying bread and butter pickles next time.
01/28/2022
It's called Poor Man's because it has Peanut Butter instead of meat.
02/08/2022
I used toasted Ezekiel bread, almond butter, plant-based Mayo, and fermented pickles along with a red onion and it turned out to be amazing!!! I would recommend this recipe along with one of my own: toasted Ezekiel bread, coarsely chopped cabbage, and almond butter. It is very crunchy and has a deliciously Asian flavor!
01/31/2022
For me, it was neither as gross as it initially sounded (I did it out of curiosity) nor as amazing as some of the comments made it out to be.
I'll stick to PB&J
02/12/2022
I've made this a lot, sometimes I'll omit the dill and use bread and butter pickles. The trick is thinly slice onion and well drained pickles, sometimes I'll throw a slice of cheese instead of pickles
02/27/2022
I actually just like the peanut butter and pickle. It sounds so insane but tastes so incredible! I never would've tried this but for having forgotten my lunch 40 years ago. A friend offered me half of her sandwich and I reluctantly tried it. It was so good, when I got home I made several of these to quench my hunger for them, and I was super skinny then. I'll try the full Monty soon.
03/29/2021
Poor Man because there is no meat. I like it, I like the onions. Adds extra crunch and kick. My family has a very similar sandwich, I think we have been making since the Great Depression; it is mayo, cheese, pickles and peanut butter. It is my favorite sandwich. I prefer the cheese to be cheddar, and the pickles to be dill.
12/13/2011
I grew up on this sandwich (without onions)!! Everybody looks at me like I'm crazy when I talk about, but when I make people try they are always presently surprised! I crave this tasty sandwich often!! Thanks for adding this, now I know that my family isn't the only one that love this!!
09/05/2014
Sounded interesting so I tried it out, and it was great! I'll be making this again.
10/09/2007
wasn't sure i'd like it but this gave my old favorite of pb, banana, and mayo a run for the money.
06/08/2009
This sandwich is amazing for what it's made out of. Like many who've reviewed it before, I tried it out of sheer curiosity and skepticism. It's both sweet and savory. I'm curious to try different versions of it in the future.
01/30/2022
Our son Brett used to make these for school lunches when he was a little kid. His brother and sister would laugh at it, but he knew he liked it. He only had three ingredients: bread, peanut butter, and pickles.
01/28/2022
I could have handled everything except the mayo. I love mayo but, for me, it didn't mix with the peanut butter at all. Either eliminate the peanut butter or the mayo.
02/06/2022
Not strange at all. My standby favorite except I use mustard instead of mayo. Makes a perfect picnic sandwich or tailgate sandwiches for us vegetarians.
01/28/2022
When I was young (in my 80's now), this is what I often had for lunch. Loved it. No onion though, but I will try that. Large family , not wealthy!!
01/29/2022
I loved peanut-butter, pickle & mayo sandwiches when I was a child in the 1960s. I'll have to give this one -- with the added onion slice -- a try. :-)
01/29/2022
Not bad but slice avocado and tomato makes it better.
10/20/2010
I made this today using egg bread. Excellent. The tanginess of the vinegar in the pickle and the crunch of the cucumber and onion were perfect against the peanut butter and mayo. I will totally make this again and again.
04/23/2009
I don't know what got into me today (I am not pregnant, so cannot blame the weird craving on that), but I decided to try this recipe. Would you believe it is NOT gross like I thought it would be and that I actually really liked it??? I did use sourdough bread because that was what we had sitting around & omitted the onions because we didn't have any sitting around. I will make this again, even when I am not hurting to go grocery shopping. Who would have guessed...! :P
10/22/2015
Nice variation on the PB sandwich - no need for mayo.
10/03/2008
I'm so glad I tried this recipe! By accident I added cinnamon to the sandwich. (Some cinnamon I was putting on apples ended up on the sandwich.) It really brought out the peanut butter! Great sandwhich! I'll admit I was skeptical despite other's good reviews. But what a great blend of all the flavors!
01/28/2022
I used to eat Peanut butter, pickle and mayo sandwiches all the time when I was in college. It was a quick, easy and delicious sandwich!
The looks people give you when you tell them what it is makes it a lot of fun to eat too!
Can't wait to try it with Onion!
01/28/2022
I grew up with my dad eating this sandwich...sometimes with some other odd addition like sardines. What wonderful memories this brought back! Made one to enjoy it with my family!
01/29/2022
Weird combination of ingredients but it works. Very good sandwich.
01/29/2022
My parents grew up in the Depression and they called this a Depression sandwich because the ingredients were inexpensive and often on hand. Their version is PB, mayonnaise and pickles or lettuce. I prefer the lettuce.
02/04/2022
I agree with one of the other reviews. The sugar in the peanut butter really came out. It made it sickening. If I ever try it again, I will use peanut butter with no added sugar. This way it would be really savory. I get a hankering every 2-3 years for an onion and mayonnaise sandwich with a little salt and my mother liked peanut butter and onion sandwiches. Because of this I had to try The Poor Man's Sandwich. It was not earth shatteringly good, but it wasn't THAT bad, either.
01/31/2022
I love peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches - always have - and they're great! But the addition of mayonnaise didn't add anything and even made it a little less appetizing to me.
07/19/2004
This was better than it sounds, but nothing special.
06/09/2010
rof lol - desperation brings forth amazing results! Just threw together 1/2 of a sandwich and - imagine my surprise - am going back for another half. My hats off to whoever created this little gem. After years and years of PB&J, it's nice to find something new.
12/29/2004
I too was skeptical about this sandwich, but it's really delicious. It's going in my recipe box.
06/07/2008
My husband told me about this sandwich when we were first married... I thought he was joking! But after 21 years of marriage he's got me liking them almost as much as he does. We always add lettuce to ours... makes a nice sandwich for those times when you didn't make it out to the grocery store (Hey, what happened to all the ham!) or you're having those "right before payday" blues :)
02/28/2010
I saw this a while ago and have been wanting to try it. So tonight, I decided I HAD to have it LOL It was ok...not bad, not great or anything...kind of weird. Probably wont make it again, but glad I tried it. Although, I might make it again if I'm ever pregnant again :)
08/08/2010
I enjoyed this strange sandwich and have made it quite a few times! Didn't measure anything and I used the claussen sliced refridgerated dill pickles which were nice and crunchy. Everyone looks at me like I'm crazy when I eat this, but I don't care - it's good!
02/01/2022
Oh how funny, My cousin pointed me to this. My grandmother lived in the great depression and I thought she had invented this sandwich herself. Her has more stuff in it. I consisted of white bread toasted, sweet pickles, bananas, red onion, peanut butter, mayo. It sounds disgusting, but it actually is really good.
01/28/2022
I thought I had invented this back in early 1970's. My friends thought I was crazy. Sometimes, if we had good bologna, I would add a slice. Was good on toast, I didn't add the onion back then, had to have fresh breath you know. Today I still have a similar sandwich of sharp cheddar cheese, mayo, dill pickle, and sometimes peanut butter. Been eating these combos for 50 + years.
01/29/2022
Actually, I remember this sandwich. It used to be the only way that my father would eat peanut butter, with the exception that he also added sliced banana, and salt and pepper. I tried it once, but found that I was happier with a simple peanut butter sandwich. NOTE: the reason for it being called a "Poor Man's Sandwich", was because even during the depression, peanut butter and dill pickles were cheap enough for the poorest person to get their hands on, especially with home grown and canned dill pickles.
01/29/2022
My sister and I have been eating this sandwich for years (more than 50). I'm surprised anyone would submit it for inclusion in the AllRecipes array of recipes.
It's a decent sandwich, but I don't eat much bread nowadays, so I haven't had it recently.
01/29/2022
This sandwich sounded weird enough to intrigue me. I did not use measurements, just eye-balled the mayo and pb. Instead of spreading mayo on one slice of bread and pb on the other, I mixed the two together. Sliced up one dill pickle and very thin sliced onion. I like it! I will make this again.
03/12/2013
At first I was quite hesitant to make this sandwich, but decided to give it a try. After the first bite, I couldn't believe what a tasty sandwich this was. I absolutely enjoyed it!! I did use 100% whole wheat bread, and mine width-wise, was longer in length, so I used (about) 2-1/2 tablespoons of creamy peanut butter, 3 Vlasic Stackers' Pickles, and instead of sliced onion, I used (about) 1 tablespoon of finely diced onion, and (about) 4 teaspoons of Hellmann's Mayonnaise. Don't skimp on the peanut butter and mayonnaise; especially the mayonnaise, as it really enhances the flavor of the sandwich. NENAH25, thank you for sharing this recipe. This recipe is a keeper!!!
05/31/2009
I made one of these, cut it in half, and made my husband close his eyes before he ate it. I knew he wouldn't even try it if I told him what it was. Of course he likes goober burgers so I knew he would like it :o) I had to make us each another one for supper and I've been told that the recipe is a keeper.
02/28/2010
Like most reviewers, I couldn't resist trying this strange combination (even though I do not particularly care for peanut butter, dill pickles or raw onion). Holy Moly! I loved it! I sliced the onion super thin so it wouldn't overpower the sandwich. It's a surprising and delightful mix of flavor.
03/19/2009
I don't get it. Was it awful? No. Will I eat it again? NO
11/01/2006
This recipe does sound strange but my goodness it has an interesting brillian flavour!
11/10/2004
Well my boyfriend loves peanut butter very, very much so we thought we would all try this sandwich. I didn't like it. It tasted like nothing to me except peanut butter. He said it was pretty good and he could taste all of it but really I think he just said that cuz he wanted another sandwich & he really didn't need one!
01/29/2022
I grew up eating peanut butter, dill pickle, and Mayo sandwiches. Just never thought to add onion. Which onion type works the best?
